Tooth Extraction

Who Needs a Tooth Extract?

You can get a filling, crown, or other dental treatment to fix cracked or damaged teeth that have been affected by decay. However, if the tooth’s damage can’t be repaired, Edgerly Dentistry may offer extraction.

The following are a few more reasons why tooth extraction may be required:

  • The decay or infection has progressed to the root of the tooth.
  • Trauma or injury has occurred.
  • There’s not enough space in your mouth for all your teeth.
  • The baby teeth do not fall out in time for permanent teeth to grow in.
  • To create space for the teeth as they migrate into place, orthodontic treatment may necessitate tooth extraction.
  • Wisdom teeth, sometimes known as third molars, are frequently pulled before or after they emerge.

Preparing For a Tooth Extraction

Prior to extracting a tooth, our dentist will go over your medical and dental history with you and take the necessary X-rays to observe the length, form, and position of the tooth and surrounding bone. Our dentist will use what they find from the X-rays to decide the best technique to remove the tooth or possibly refer you to an oral surgeon.

They will use local anesthesia to numb the region around your tooth before removing it during a routine extraction. Your oral surgeon may use intravenous (IV) anesthesia, which ranges from conscious sedation to general anesthetic. It is used to put you to sleep during a surgical extraction.

If this is the case, make arrangements for someone to drive you home and possibly to the pharmacy. After the treatment, have someone stay with you until the effects of the procedure have worn off.
